It was in his youth that he discovered his love for writing. At age twelve, he began writing poems and stories which eventually were published in the local newspapers. He was educated at Hiram College but after graduation moved to Toledo to work as a civil engineer.

However, he soon became interested in mining and left engineering to become a prospector in Arizona. Though his career in mining did not last long, he found much success as an author. He became not only an author but also a lecturer and gold miner during the latter part of his life.
